Almost immediately he realizes that the woman holds a connection to a secret from his past that he’s carried with him for years. As she remains unaware of the poignant way their lives are intertwined, Dr. Hubbard makes it his mission to keep her in his life until he can come to terms with how to handle the reality of what she represents. What begins as an unwillingness to let go of old memories and redeem past mistakes, soon turns into an intricate web of deception that forces Dr. Hubbard to make a choice. He can reveal the truth about their connection and face the anger and heartache that might come with that revelation or let her silently move on and maybe lose his only chance for reconciliation and redemption.

I really enjoyed this authors style. The overall tone of the book was a bit darker than I usually read. And it was that style that kept me going. I couldn't give a higher rating though as there was a glaring lack of research that I couldn't ignore. The author clearly has never worked in medicine or researched surgery and hospitals at all! Many flaws from that perspective. The most obvious being the bracelet that could not have been left on by a surgeon for 15 years. It would have to have been removed every time he scrubbed for surgery.Product details

Sometimes it Rains in California Jennifer Strom 9781530442201 Books Reviews
The story is about how your life can change in an instant. And about how the consequences of your actions, or inactions, can come back in later life.
I hate spoilers in reviews, so I am finding it hard to go into too much detail in this case. However, it is safe to say that events will keep you guessing as to what is happening, or indeed what did happen all those years ago.
My biggest problem with the story was identifying with the characters. In particular, I couldn't understand why they reacted in some of the ways they did.
I would not normally have chosen to read this book, but was given a free copy in exchange for a fair and honest review. I have to say that I'm glad I was. At times I found it a strain to read, with the events being at times painful, but by the end it had been worth it.
Without trying to spoil too much, there are quite a few game changers that happen throughout the novel… The past is the past but sometimes the past can come back to the present, and this is what this story is all about. The author successfully draws you into the story from the beginning and keeps you hanging on... making you crave the specific history between the protagonist and his past teenage lover. I love hospital settings, so it begins with tons of exciting drama in the ER. Then I loved the transitions between past and present. I felt like the author did this fairly well and it was very smooth flowing. The character development and the justification of their reactions to certain scenarios could have been better. I’m a big fan of strong female heroine characters, so naturally I disliked April. But I loved the protagonist Dr. Hubbard. He is one of those secretly caring kind men, but over the years develops a tougher skin to mask it, and becomes slightly lost in the pressures and expectations of society. Very well done.
Sometimes it Rains in California is the story of Brad Hubbard, a good-looking and successful neurosurgeon in Los Angeles, and his efforts to deal with the consequences of a fatal mistake he made as a teenager, particularly after April, his lost love, turns up again in his life and he finds himself responsible for her well-being.
The story is well-written and well-paced, and I enjoyed it for most part.
I did have some issues with the characterization though - Brad and April are a little too passive, especially in situations where an outpouring of anger would be justified.
The part where April fails to recognize Brad as her former boyfriend is not so strange. People change. I've rediscovered old acquaintances online and they have changed to such an extent, I wouldn't have recognized them if I had passed them in the street.
What I didn't understand was how April could be so lax in the matter of her psychopathic fiance, who beat her up badly enough to warrant a long stay in the hospital. She doesn't seem to want him to go to jail, shows no anger for the damage he's inflicted on her. And yet, on the other hand, she takes the unforgivable 'I absolutely cannot accept' route with Brad, who has done everything he can for her. Of course, people can be irrational, but this just struck a wrong note.
Another problem was the rape incident towards the end, brought about by Brad's jealous model girlfriend Janie. He has two nurses and his housekeeper to keep an eye on the recuperating April, and yet Janie manages to smuggle a man inside to rape April. And, afterwards, April's reaction is as strange as ever -
“Look, I don’t want you to get mad at her. It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t be here interrupting your lives. I’ve already messed up everything and I feel terrible.”
I lost all patience with April at this point, and her later behavior with Brad took it further downhill. This would have been a better story if she hadn't been such a damp squib, and if there had been more interaction between them.
I received a free copy of this book for an honest, non-reciprocal review.
Sometimes it Rains in California is the story of a man who did something terrible in high school and spent the rest of his life trying to atone for it. But when Dr. Hubbard saves the life a young woman from his past, he realizes he has to choose—expose his mistake and relive the past, or let the only woman he ever loved slip away—again.
I wasn’t sure how I felt about Dr. Hubbard. He pretty much lied his way through the book, but he did so out of fear. On top of that, this book wasn’t very well edited. It’s full of mis-matched tenses and misused words. It kept me engaged enough to read all the way through, so I am giving it three roses, but I wouldn’t suggest going out of one’s way to read it.
I purchased this book based on the synopsis, as it is the type of book that I normally do enjoy reading. The plot and the story line kept my attention and it was an easy read to get through. I did find myself invested in the characters and how their individual situations would work out, even though at times I was torn at who I wanted to side with and maybe a little angry at the main character for some of the ways he handled things. The ending surprised me a little bit because it wasn't how I would typically expect this type of book to end, but it ended up still being satisfying to me. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book.
I really enjoyed this authors style. The overall tone of the book was a bit darker than I usually read. And it was that style that kept me going.
